I’ve had this problem my entire life. I’m willing to bet the reason I’m not great at drawing females on any level is because I never had lady characters of my own, growing up. Leikeli was my first real step into this realm, if you can believe that. 8|
Even when I’ve done fanart, I always latch onto male characters as favorites. I’m really not sure why this is. Shortage of truly interesting ladies in mainstream media? Is it something about my own personality or preferences when it comes to traits traditionally manifested by male characters?
This is making me mentally scan the comic I’ve been collaborating on, with this in mind. It’s a little different because I have more responsibilities on the art end than the writing end, but I do notice we have a lot of male characters. There is some nonstereotypical stuff going on (for one thing, the main character’s girlfriend has more of a spine than he does), and I do believe they were written as personalities first, but it might be worth it to step back and see where a little more variety might be introduced. Especially things that are wholly my responsibility, like crowd scenes and incidental characters. Between those, there’s a real chance to capture a richer cross-section of the world’s population.
